Especially the soft ones! It’s a big no-no. And it’s not just me saying it — it’s science talking. 👩🏼‍🔬

Bruxism (especially during sleep) is not simply a bad habit to “block” with plastic. It’s often a physiological response to stress — a neuro-muscular mechanism, not just a dental pathology.

❗ Here’s why soft mouthguards may do more harm than good:
1. They don’t stop clenching — they just give it something to chew on.
• Studies show soft splints can increase muscle activity, leading to more clenching, not less.
• 📖 Lobbezoo F et al. (2004) found that soft splints may actually exacerbate parafunctional activity.

2. You’ll end up replacing them again and again.
• Soft guards wear out quickly, especially in high-intensity bruxers — leading to frequent replacements.

3. You’re not addressing the real issue:
• Bruxism is linked to stress, sleep disorders, medications, and even airway issues (like sleep apnea).
• Masking it with a soft guard = ignoring your body’s signal.

4. You risk long-term side effects:
• Cases of posterior open bites, occlusal changes, and TMJ strain have been reported after long-term, unsupervised splint use — especially with partial or soft appliances.
• 📖 Okeson JP (2003) and Greene CS (2001): highlight how improperly selected appliances can create new dysfunctions.

A deep bite, full Class II molar and canine relationship.
This 12-year-old girl came to me complaining about difficulty chewing and pain when eating certain foods—mostly due to her deep bite.
We completed 24 months of treatment, carefully respecting her developmental stage, root health, gums, and natural growth.

1 - I cry with literally everything. I’m happy, I cry, I’m sad and I cry, I’m thankful I cry, I’m angry I cry. I’m a crier for literally every single emotion
2 - I get a bit too obsessed with habits. If I start a habit it really really gets almost impossible to break.
3 - I support toxic dynamics way too much and for too long. It’s like my mind becomes quite resilient and pushes myself to keep going even when it’s obvious it is being detrimental for me.
4 - I’ve a super strong sweet tooth. But like… strong strong.
5 - I’ve been actively talking to myself about aging and trying to break apart any fear or anxiety about it.
6 - I deal poorly with misogynist and condescending behaviour which is very challenging in dentistry
7 - When something is really bothering me I’ve to talk about it with someone until I get the matter out of the system. Even if it takes dozens of conversations
8 - I got a second phone to become my work phone, I made rules about my work phone so I wouldn’t be connected to my job the whole time. Now I even forget it at home many times 😅.
9 - I’ve always been a hermit inside an extrovert body. As time goes by my hermit is taking over
10 - I absolutely hate going to the gym and everything gym related

No, I know, I used to be one of those rolling her eyes whenever I cross paths with this narrative, too.

But did you know mothers keep foetal cells in their bodies, in several different places for all their lives? Recently , a study showed 70% of women who became mothers in their lives showed foetal cells in their brains? 🧠 mind blowing right?

Motherhood takes us many things but it brings something precious: it filters well what’s to keep and to let go. And those choices are subtle and come up quite natural for self preservation.

I’ve realised my self perseverance made moves while I was pregnant that now reflect on my new life. And every single move is starting to make much sense, pushing away the right energy and getting closer to the realities that brings me more peace and joy.

Few cases finishing these last couple of months.
When a case finishes, as long as my patients are happy and confident about their smiles, I feel my mission has been accomplished. On the other hand, it’s a cycle that ends and I’ll not be asking about their trip, their grandma, their uni, their new business… I stop knowing about their lives and being involved in it. It’s always a bittersweet appointment, the last one.

I’m excited to welcome new patients and starting new cycles 🔁 now!

Julian came to visit me because his mother believed this would be something he would be grateful for in the future: a bright and aligned smile.

He came to his appointment dragged by her and initially he absolutely hated the process. Every time he would sit down on my chair for the first few months he would ask me “when can I take these off?”

I think it happened to Julian what eventually happens to majority of us. We look back and we understand now our mother’s decisions, choices and advices.

He’s now 18 and as along as he keeps wearing his retainers well and coming to his annual reviews, he doesn’t have to worry about his teeth anymore. He can smile confidently and this self esteem will for sure be crucial on his personal and professional paths.

This can cause baby bottle tooth decay (early cavities) due to prolonged exposure to sugars while sleeping. Water only if a bottle is needed!

2️⃣ Use a Pacifier or Thumb Past Age 2-3

Prolonged sucking habits can lead to bite problems, like an open bite or narrow palate, which may require orthodontic treatment later.

3️⃣ Skip Cleaning Gums Before Teeth Erupt

Even before teeth come in, bacteria can build up. I’d gently wipe my baby’s gums with a damp cloth after feeds to promote good oral health.

4️⃣ Delay the First Dental Visit

Many parents wait too long! The first check-up should be by age 1 or when the first tooth appears to catch early issues.

5️⃣ Share Spoons or Clean Pacifiers With My Mouth
