A story about a dentist who moved to the UK. Many don’t recognise the incredible privilege which is practicing what we studied for. Valentina show us, on May’s issue, how this is such a powerful limitation and how it affects many other aspects of her life in England. And how she decided to abandon her career.

Valentina Restrepo was a dentist in Medellín, then a dentist-in-waiting in Manchester, grinding through UK registration exams, grey winters and years of unexplained infertility. She had a plan, and the plan was not working anymore.
In this essay, she writes about the moment her body refused to go any further, the conversation that changed everything and the life she found, entirely by accident, on the other side of giving up. She is now a language teacher in Bali, seven months pregnant, and, by her own account, happier than she has any right to be.

All of us caring for children should contribute not only to their health, but also to their safety and their ability to seek help when needed.

One small ritual I’ve introduced, especially when confirming stability with removable appliances, is asking children to tell me their full address and their parents’ phone number.

Of course, I already have this information in their files, but the purpose is different: I want parents to pause for a moment and confirm that their child is able to communicate essential information in case of an emergency.

While they speak with their appliances in place, I can also assess their clarity and confidence in communicating.

It’s a small gesture, but one that can raise awareness and encourage preparedness in a meaningful way.

Well, I know this is not about teeth but it’s about being human. Before we are professionals, we are people and now parents! With flaws, fears, and challenges. I believe that embracing our humanity, rather than hiding it, is a true superpower. The world might value efficiency and predictability, but it’s in our moments of vulnerability that we truly connect and grow. Including with our patients.
Babies are the perfect example of this. And if they don’t show you it’s okay to fail, you might be babying wrong.
To my fellow colleagues who are struggling, whether it’s a tough night or a high fever, know that you’re doing your best. You’re are indeed a health professional but you’re also a person holding it together for yourself and those who you care for ♥️

I know I know. Perios see gums, endos see roots, prosthos see teeth shapes and I? I see bones! We all see different things in the same picture, we all come up with diagnosis, based on the knowledge we have collected. Thing is: do we know what we are not seeing? Do we know what we don’t know?
Here I am pointing out some points you didn’t think about when you saw that midline shift! 🤓

Sometimes the best mechanics don’t even require any braces or aligners. It requires diagnosis and planning and then it can be this simple 🫶🏼

I love what I do: correcting jaws, helping children breathe better, and ultimately enabling them to smile and perform at their best.

But something I really enjoy is spreading awareness. Taking the time to explain why a diagnosis makes sense, and how impactful a well-designed treatment plan can be, is incredibly rewarding. When supported by images, my own clinical cases and anatomical diagrams, everything becomes easier to understand and connect.

On this day, the amazing team at @greenwichdentalhealth and I dedicated time to creating a truly valuable learning evening for parents and colleagues. We shared healthy snacks, presented two live patient journeys from two children currently undergoing treatment with me and their families and answered a wide range of questions.

Most importantly, we helped parents realise that they have the power to make a difference when they have the right knowledge and take action at the right time.

At this age, it’s not just aesthetic. An underbite can affect upper jaw development, cause gum recession, TMJ issues, and tooth wear.

After one assessment, we created a tailored treatment plan.

In just 2 months, the main problem was resolved ✨

Early treatment makes all the difference.

I didn’t do the job so I won’t take the credits. Well… I created the tongue exercise plan, recommended myofunctional therapy and pointed out the issue with mouth breathing. Aligning his teeth was part of the treatment but not the treatment itself.
We all know muscles drive real body changes and that’s why gyms are packed. And guess what your tongue is? A muscle👅👃🏼🏋️‍♀️

I’ve been treating children since the day I left university…
And today, many of those same children are now at university themselves.

They’ve always been my motivation to improve not just smiles but quality of life.

That’s why I chose to go beyond the traditional academic path.
I trained with mentors across South America: Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, where dentistry looks deeper.

Because it’s not just about straight teeth.
It’s about how your child breathes, sleeps, grows, and lives.

In many cases, improving the airway and breathing can transform a child’s development, sleep quality, and overall wellbeing.

For the past 8 years, I’ve brought this knowledge and experience to families here in London and I couldn’t be more grateful for your trust 🤍

Not everyone is treating children at the right timing and pace. It’s it hard to diagnose, to find the right appliance for that particular child and compliance. It takes years to get confident about developing stages Ortho protocols. I’m lucky this has been my foundation. Since day one, out of uni, my life has been diagnosing the little ones. I’ve seen them growing, going to high school and uni. All while wearing their Ortho appliances at their own appropriate stages. If your child needs an orthodontic assessment, you might need my help 📩
