Not everyone is treating children at the right timing and pace. It’s it hard to diagnose, to find the right appliance for that particular child and compliance. It takes years to get confident about developing stages Ortho protocols. I’m lucky this has been my foundation. Since day one, out of uni, my life has been diagnosing the little ones. I’ve seen them growing, going to high school and uni. All while wearing their Ortho appliances at their own appropriate stages. There’s something I’ve learned in dentistry that no one really prepares you for.

The moment you make yourself accessible, when you step in, help, open doors, shout for someone so things keep moving and you stop being invisible. You become a reference point. A standard. Someone people look up to.

And admiration is complicated.
Because when people look up to you, it doesn’t always stay as gratitude.

Sometimes it quietly turns into comparison.
Comparison turns into pressure.
Pressure turns into a need to prove something.

Not everyone wants to replace you but some people want to show they could be you. Or better. To demonstrate value that exceeds the person who once made space for them. And without meaning to, the very doors you opened become something they feel they need to walk through ahead of you.

So they come back.
Not just for help but for positioning, validation, visibility.
Because you were the one who showed what was possible.

In dentistry, being helpful doesn’t just create connection. It creates memory, expectation and sometimes competition. The people you helped don’t disappear, they orbit back, shaped by admiration, ambition, and the quiet desire to be more than they were when you first helped them.

It’s not a reason to stop being generous.
But it is a reason to be intentional.

Because accessibility echoes.
And when you open doors, you should decide how close people are allowed to stand to the frame.

In 2025 I gave up on my main character energy. I didn’t travel as much as the usual, I didn’t eat on time 98% of the times and now I’m used to cold food, I left many (I mean many) emails to read later and there is an unconfirmed numbers of WhatsApp messages I never opened.
I didn’t see my friends as often, I declined very interesting professional invitations and I belated deadlines. I learned the most incredible lessons about myself and about dynamics with others. And the most important thing I learned was that up to this year I didn’t know what the most important thing in the world was. Life is absolutely great and it just gets better month after month with this tiny person I made.

Thank you to all my patients who care for me personally and shared their stories on their own parenthood, who checked on me on the days I had to cancel my diary because the little one needed me, who saw me beyond what I do for them professionally, during this first year of becoming a mother.

A huge thank you to my colleagues and leaders who trust me and my work and gradually built up safe places to work as a mother in postpartum. A natural selection occurred and it just enlightened what, without the right priorities, it was really hard to see: we need love and compassion more than we need full diaries.

Best wishes everyone! I hope 2026 is as good as 2025!

As a kids’ dentist focused on jaw growth, breathing quality, and early orthodontic intervention, this is what I advise every parent:
1. Protect nasal breathing
Mouth breathing isn’t normal. If your child sleeps with an open mouth, snores, grinds teeth, or wakes tired, have their airway evaluated early.

2. Watch how your child sleeps
Snoring, restless sleep, night sweating, bed-wetting, or frequent waking can be signs of airway restriction—even in “healthy” kids.

3. Encourage proper oral habits early
Prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier use, bottle feeding, and tongue thrusting can restrict jaw growth and narrow the airway.

4. Focus on jaw growth—not just straight teeth
Crowded teeth are often a sign the jaws didn’t grow wide enough. Expanding and guiding growth early can reduce the need for extractions or surgery later.

5. Chew real food
Soft, processed diets don’t stimulate jaw development. Encourage chewing with age-appropriate whole foods to support facial growth.

6. Tongue posture matters
The tongue should rest on the roof of the mouth, not the floor. Proper tongue posture supports jaw width and nasal breathing.

7. Don’t wait until all adult teeth are in
Early orthodontic intervention (often ages 5–8) can guide growth while the bones are still adaptable—this is often easier, faster, and more stable.

8. Breathing affects behavior, learning, and health
Poor sleep and restricted airways can show up as ADHD-like symptoms, anxiety, poor focus, or emotional dysregulation.

9. Teeth grinding is a red flag
Grinding in kids is often linked to airway stress, not just “stress” or teething.

10. Prevention is easier than correction
Supporting healthy breathing and jaw growth early can reduce the need for braces, extractions, CPAP, or sleep appliances later in life.

As a clinician, I've had the privilege of watching young souls grow, and I must say, they give me hope. Most people I meet are under 18, and many of them are teenagers. I care for them deeply, starting with their teeth, but I inevitably learn so much more about each of them throughout our journey together.

Take Mica, for instance. His maturity and self-awareness, particularly when he chose to delete social media for his mental health, left a lasting impression. His own initiative. I was so well impressed how such a young champ would have such clarity.

While I'm thrilled he achieved his dream smile and gained confidence, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as he graduated from my care 🫶🏼

Other than that, I’ll not tell you how much of a great smile you must be missing, I’ll let Mica tell you what we can achieve together next year ❤️

If your child constantly breathes through their mouth, snores, or sleeps with their mouth open, that can affect jaw growth. Get it checked early.
2. Watch the habits.
Thumb sucking, pacifier use beyond toddler years, and tongue thrusting can push the palate narrow. Address the habits ASAP.
3. Make sure their tongue lives on the palate.
The tongue is nature’s expander. If it doesn’t rest there, the palate can stay narrow.
4. Prioritize nasal health.
Allergies, congestion, enlarged tonsils or adenoids — these can all push a child toward mouth breathing. Treat early, not later.
5. Early evaluation is not overkill — it’s prevention.
Bring them for an orthodontic assessment around age 7. That’s when we can guide growth instead of fixing it later.

What makes parents look for my help?

Most of the time, it starts with a feeling , a sense that something isn’t quite right with their child’s teeth. As a mother myself, I’ve learned to trust that instinct. When something feels “off,” it usually is.

In orthodontics, there’s really no such thing as diagnosing too early but the opposite is definitely true. I’ve lost count of how many cases I wished I could have seen two or three years sooner. Earlier evaluations often lead to better, more predictable results, and the treatment process itself tends to be smoother and, in many cases, quicker.

Every time I update my CV I realise once again I never really learned with any postgrad or ortho course the amount of stuff I’ve learned with my mentor. She became my mentor but I don’t think she knows I call her that 🫣

Up to today I try to send her flowers on her birthday and try to visit every time I can. She taught me not only the basics of ortho, she taught me how to think ortho. Recipes don’t work as well as a good ortho thinking process and for that I’m forever thankful to have met her.

Aligners have changed dentistry in amazing ways. I use them, I recommend them.
But they also come with a plastic problem we don’t really talk about.

Every treatment = dozens of plastic trays.
Multiply that by thousands of patients… and the numbers get wild, fast.
Recycling exists (hello TerraCycle 👋♻️) but barely any practices offer it and even fewer tell their patients about it.
So most aligners? Straight in the bin.

Meanwhile we’re all trying to live more sustainably… except in dentistry, where we sometimes forget that medical products also leave a footprint.

I don’t want to be the party-pooper… but someone has to say it.

We can’t see developing teeth without X-rays and the radiation is very low.
Delaying X-rays out of fear often means tougher treatment later.

Adult Open Bite Case, Age 36
This 36-year-old patient presented with an anterior open bite, leading to difficulties with incising food and contributing to increased strain on the posterior teeth.

Treatment focuses on correcting the vertical discrepancy, improving anterior guidance, and distributing bite forces more evenly. Depending on the case, approaches may include fixed appliances, elastics, or skeletal anchorage.

Adult open bite correction is possible with the right diagnosis and biomechanics.

This 36-year-old patient presented with an anterior open bite, leading to difficulties with incising food and contributing to increased strain on the posterior teeth.

Treatment focuses on correcting the vertical discrepancy, improving anterior guidance, and distributing bite forces more evenly. Depending on the case, approaches may include fixed appliances, elastics, or skeletal anchorage.
